Hospital In Focus | Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH)
It was in the year 1987 that Dr K.G. Alexander had a dream and a vision - to make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all. And thus was born Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH), an institution that has been steadily revolutionizing the very concept of healthcare in Kerala. A tribute to the Late K C Varghese (fondly known as ‘Baby’) - the father of current Chairman and Managing Director Dr. K G Alexander - the hospital has been embodying and responding to the various natures and genres of wellness demands of the state with doting devotion and unshakeable consistency.
The vision of the institution - Affordable, Accessible and Quality Services to All - sets the tone for its mission. The latter stresses the Endeavour to provide quality healthcare in a safe and patient centric environment by highly skilled professionals using nothing but the best medical practices and ultra-advanced technology. “We offer patients outstanding value in an environment friendly atmosphere”, explains Dr.K.G.Alexander as he dwells on the topic.
A practicing physician with a dream that closely resonates with the hospital’s core philosophy, Dr. Alexandar is a reputed name in his space with stellar qualifications, and a persona who features on several prestigious industry Boards and Forums. He is the ExMember of Board of Studies - School of Management Studies - NIT Calicut, Life member of academic bodies like API, RSSDI, CSI, Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine and IMA, and also a Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy. The trailblazing leader happens to be a graduate of Mar Thoma College (Thiruvalla), an MBBS from S.K Medical College, Muzaffarpur (Bihar University, 1980) and an MD from J.J.M Medical College, Davangere (1985). Today, he is leading the movement of Baby Memorial Hospital from the front, going the extra mile in every little and large initiative to ensure that patients and patrons receive not just the cure they need, but also the care they deserve.
Dr Alexander captures the success saga of his institution vividly when he says, “We are Kerala’s finest multi-disciplinary super speciality hospital for a reason. I believe that reason is our umbilical attachment to principles like trust, transparency and humanity which flows into everything we dream, dare and do. The hospital team †which extends to 300 doctors and over 2000 nursing, paramedical and administrative staff – relentlessly strives to celebrate our ideology everyday, which is More-Than-Care.”
Blessed and buoyed by the reverence and affection of the markets it serves, Baby Memorial Hospital has been crossing chequered milestones at a nimble clip. What started out as a 52 bedded hospital in 1987 in rented premises is now a fully blossomed, centre of excellence with infrastructure and facilities that conform to the stringent-most global yardsticks and parameters.
The hospital currently possesses 600 beds, over 40 Medical and Surgical departments, excellent paramedical support systems, 16 world-class operation theatres, 11 fully equipped ultramodern ICUs and an accident and trauma care unit that runs round the clock.
Baby Memorial School of Nursing and the College of Nursing were established in 1995 and 2002 respectively. Baby Memorial College of Allied Medical Specialties conducts Graduate courses in BSc MLT, BSc Radiology Technology, and BASLP & Diploma Courses in different Para Medical subjects.
Excellence, they say, is not an act but a daily habit. And for the habit to be truly consistent, it must be born deep within. At Baby Memorial Hospital, the reality is no different. The team’s attention to detail, commitment to service and attachment to quality stems from a set of profound values and deep-seated credos - such as care, compassion, courtesy, quality, safety, affordability, continuous development & improvement, effective communication, teamwork, ethics, social responsibility and environmental consciousness.
The relentless quest for excellence is also evident in the multiple quality certifications and compliances the hospital enjoys today. Some of them are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, NABH Accreditation, NABH Emergency Medicine Department Certification, NABH Nursing Excellence Certification, NABL Accreditation and the NABH Ethics Committee Accreditation.
BMH is also currently recognized by The National Board of Examinations for DNB courses in Anesthesiology, General Medicine, Orthopedics, Radio Diagnosis, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Plastic and Micro Vascular Surgery, Urology, Emergency Medicine & Critical Care Medicine.
In keeping with its driving spirit of More-Than-Care, Baby Memorial Hospital been stepping beyond the ‘call of duty’, and responded to its larger duties as responsible corporate citizens.
The institution has been spearheading several noble initiatives and endeavors selflessly. It organizes free medical camps and clinics in rural and semi urban areas to facilitate early screening and treatment of diseases, supports the BMH Community Health Centre at a nearby village named Kakkodi, extends a hand of support to people with Down’s Syndrome in association with Down Syndrome Trust (DoST), provides for education scholarships for the promotion of employability and entrepreneurship through the Baby Memorial Charitable Trust and conducts emergency and First Aid classes for the general public, to name some.
That apart, the leadership has pioneered BMH HEAL, an annual flagship programme initiated in 2014 - a unique initiative that provides a dynamic and interactive platform for hospitals and healthcare providers across India to engage in outcome based discussions and idea exchanges aimed at the overarching goal of improving healthcare services through visionary leadership and efficient administration.
They say no good deed goes unrewarded. Not surprisingly, Baby Memorial Hospital has been at the recipient of countless industry honours and accolades. The hospital has been honoured by the Govt. of Kerala for its contribution in identifying & controlling the Nipah virus outbreak. Baby Memorial Hospital has also bagged the National Safety Council’s Award for Safety during the National Safety Day Celebrations in 2017, an occasion when it was recognized as the safest hospital in Kerala. This achievement continued in 2018 and 2019 also. As it happens, BMH is the first Hospital in Kerala to win this prestigious award. Baby Memorial Hospital was also awarded for Substantial and Sustained efforts in Pollution Control among Private Hospitals (in the 500 Bed or more Category) by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board. In fact, the team achieved this feat not once or twice, but right across 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018. BMH also happens to be the proud recipient of the AHPI Award for excellence in Healthcare for the last 3 consecutive years- 2018, 2019 & 2020 respectively.
