“I am a strong believer that a person should do a job which he or she – Enjoys, Contributes To and Learns From.
The key reason for me to remain attached to the Healthcare Industry for three decades is possible that it satisfies all the three criteria for me!”

“When your work becomes your life, you don’t have to try at all for work-life balance”

An engineer by chance-not by choice

Nursing a dream of pursuing a career in Medicine since his middle school days, he succumbed to peer pressure from friends and appeared for IIT entrance. For the bright student, he was, cleared the entrance examination and got selected for IIT Kharagpur. After graduating from there with Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, he stumbled upon a chance to get associated with medical field- his dream career, and he joined Philips Medical, India as a Service Engineer of Medical Devices in Calcutta (his hometown) in 1977. For the next 13 years at Philips, he worked on various aspects of business, like Projects, Marketing, Sales, and Customer Support, etc. across India and in the Middle East.

Young achiever- Yet a fast learner

In 1980, when he became the Manager for Eastern India Operations, he was just 25 years old-  perhaps one of the youngest Philips Managers at that time. “This responsibility gave me some jitters but made me feel good and inspired me to prove myself”, he fondly remembers those days.  “My selection as one of the first few Asian Expats to work at our global HQ in Holland was an equally memorable personal accomplishment at Philips and in my entire career. Those years in mid-to-end 80’s were great years of learning and fun!”

His next professional assignment was at Hewlett-Packard Medical, as the Country Manager in India. He spent close to a decade at HP Medical in various roles including Director-South Asia responsible for countries spanning from Vietnam to Pakistan and Director for Emerging Markets and Financing Programs for the Asia Pacific (in Agilent Technologies towards the latter part).

The homecoming to the true leadership role

Returning to Philips in 2004 as the Managing Director of Philips Medical Systems India was like home-coming after being away for some time! In his capacity as Senior Director and Business Head, Philips Medical Systems for the Indian Subcontinent, he had the overall responsibility for leading the entire operations in this region and to ensure market leadership, significant growth and customer delight for all the Philips Healthcare businesses. His team was responsible for operations in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

Life- a learning curve

On a personal front, he has participated in and learned from various leadership and management programs including one from the Michigan University where he had the good fortune of having stalwarts like Prof. C K Prahalad, as his teacher.

“I am a strong believer that a person should do a job which he or she – Enjoys, Contributes To and Learns From. The key reason for me to remain attached to the Healthcare Industry for three decades is possible that it satisfies all the three criteria for me!”

Always a resilient collaborator

Mr. Anjan Bose, fondly and respectfully called Anjan-da by all and sundry in the industry, has been a wonderful collaborator par excellence, firmly believing that the only way to break the historically well-known trust deficits in this critical sector was COLLABORATION, COLLABORATION AND MORE COLLABORATION!
He is a thought leader of great stature and orator of the highest caliber, demonstrated through honest, sincere, passionate efforts and good initiatives..”Even competitors can collaborate for good causes”! Anjan-da has always described Healthcare Sector as a complex jigsaw puzzle with so much diversity and passionately believed in the power of working together collaboratively as “one solid industry team” cutting across all barriers for the common causes!
When someone appreciated his good work, he would often respond by quoting from Robert Frost’s poem…“The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.”
