Mr Vipin Pathak’s philosophy in life bears uncanny resemblance to another trailblazer, Steve Jobs. Jobs’ motto: ‘Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish’ could well be Brand Vipin’s very own punchline. That’s not the only thing in common between the two, though. Much like Jobs, Mr Pathak has always allowed Design Thinking (mapping outcomes to purpose-driven approaches), inspiration and raw, hands-on grit lead his journey – one that saw him becoming a sparkling beacon of new India’s entrepreneurial spirit. A cursory glance at his prolific career and his inspired start-up Care24, and it’s easy to understand why.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Mr. Vipin started his career as a software engineer at Financial Technologies and quickly moved up the ranks to become a business consultant at PwC and thereon a manager at Ernst & Young. The entrepreneurial DNA in him, however, soon kicked in, and Mr. Vipin realized that he could no longer postpone his true destiny: That of starting out on his own. The time had come to make a genuine difference to society – by giving voice to both its unsaid, and un-heeded, aspirations.

Every saga has a beginning. In Mr. Vipin’s case, it all starting when the founding members’ own parents needed better medical aid and personal attention at home. And struggled to find one that fit their requirement. Scratching the surface of the market confirmed their long-held convictions : That they weren’t alone. Countless families and homes in the city (and, by any stretch of calculation, across the country) were going through the same unfortunate plight. The need ran deep – right across the social fabric. The irony lay in the fact that research has proven that patients can recover faster (20-30%) at home (given higher comfort levels) and reduce hospital readmission by 27%. The supply side of the story, however, was far short of expectations. For example, the need for a nurse for simple blood pressure check or injections is a challenge for children who either have to take off from work to visit hospitals or rely on local agencies. The local agencies, on their part, have no reliability or quality check on services. The team of founders decided to act without ado: By laying the foundation of a hi-quality and reliable medical service framework – first in Mumbai and, in time, expanded to other cities.

Vipin’s management degree, his rich repertoire of experience (earned from multinational knowledge houses such as PwC and EY) and an unquenchable motivation to improve lives (for example, of people in small towns who often struggle to travel to far-away places to access better healthcare) provided the perfect recipe and launch-pad for his dream startup. The year was 2014. A star was born. The world came to know it as Care24.
