Whenever technology has advanced, the mankind has always benefitted from it. One such leap in medical technology is the advent of surgical robot. Da Vinci Xi, the latest technology in Surgical Robotics is now installed at Apollo Hospitals, Bhat on March 12. By the end of March, the hospital already performed 11 robotic assisted surgeries successfully with excellent clinical outcomes. Commenting on the launch and success of the program, Neeraj Lal, COO, Apollo Ahmedabad, said the robotic market is expected to surpass $7 billion by 2025. Today robot assisted surgery can improve or correct a growing number of conditions, helping to decrease the risk of infection and offer great precision and accuracy.
Robotic surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive (small incision) surgery where surgeons use a computer-controlled robot to assist them in certain surgeries. The robot’s arms have a high degree of dexterity, allowing surgeons to operate in very tight spaces in the body that would otherwise only be accessible through open surgery. Robotic surgery offers many benefits to patients compared to open surgery, such as: shorter hospitalization, reduced pain, faster recovery, and smaller incisions resulting in less risk of infection, minimal blood loss and scarring.
When performing robotic surgery using Da Vinci Xi Surgical System, the surgeon works from a computer console within the operating room. The surgeon controls miniature instruments mounted on three robotic arms to make small incisions. A 3-D camera is attached to the fourth robotic arm which magnifies the surgical site and offers the clearest view of surgical field to the surgeon. The surgeon’s hand movements are then transmitted through the console to the instruments attached to the robot’s arms granting maximum control to the surgeon. It is worth noting that at no point in time the robot will operate or take charge of the surgery at its own will. The system is completely controlled by the operating surgeon alone.
Da Vinci Xi robotic system is applicable in the field of urology, gynecology, oncology, cardiac and thoracic surgeries, pediatric and gastrointestinal surgeries, general surgery, kidney and liver transplants. Apollo hospitals Ahmedabad has a cadre of trained and experienced robotic surgeons and the hospital will be training more surgeons in coming months.
