19th May 2021: LifeCell Introduces the-first-of-its-kind test to evaluate omega-3 DHA levels
LifeCell, India’s leading healthcare & diagnostic solutions provider has launched Omega Score, a first-of-its-kind diagnostic test to promote better newborn health. OmegaScore-Prenatal and OmegaScore-Newborn diagnostic test have been designed to analyse the levels of an important fatty acid, omega-3 DHA or docosahexaenoic acid in pregnant women as well as lactating mothers.
DHA accounts for 97% of omega-3 fatty acids in our brains and is considered essential for supporting the optimal vision and cognitive development of a child. The importance of DHA in pregnancy has been well-researched, showing that DHA plays a key role in not only reducing the risk of preeclampsia and preterm labour but also ensures a healthy birth weight.
The human body is incapable of manufacturing DHA, and so the nutrient must be obtained through a DHA-rich diet or supplements. Since a large section of the Indian population is vegetarian, Indian mothers and pregnant women are usually susceptible to DHA deficiency. The fact that India’s DHA intake is the lowest as compared to other developing countries, compounds the problem – stressing the need to supplement DHA in the diet during pregnancy and lactation.
Marking the milestone, Mayur Abhaya – MD of LifeCell - shared his mind with Voice of Healthcare: “There is no denying the fact that DHA is important for the overall health of both the mothers as well babies. The launch of Omega Score for pregnant women as well as lactating mothers is part of our commitment to provide every mother and baby with advanced, accessible, and affordable diagnostic services. With this new addition, we hope to usher a new era of good health for both child and mother.”
