Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao, announced the Karnataka government's plan to implement a mass screening program aimed at checking the health of the state's entire population. Speaking at the inauguration of new facilities at Justice KS Hegde Charitable Hospital on Monday, Rao outlined the initiative, which will begin as a pilot project in eight districts.
"Under this program, we will be mass screening the entire population of Karnataka. Each household in these districts will be covered through the health department," Rao stated. The program will focus on screening for blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and early detection of cervical cancer, breast cancer, and other diseases. In cases of high blood pressure and blood sugar, the government will ensure the regular door delivery of necessary medications.
Rao emphasized the importance of early disease detection and prevention. "It is easier to treat any disease if detected early. Many people reach the hospital at the last stage when it is too late. This mass screening program is designed to ensure early detection and timely treatment," he said.
Highlighting the critical role of the private sector, Rao praised their contributions to new technology and research, and their role in providing doctors with valuable exposure. He called for collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to enhance healthcare services.
Speaker UT Khader also spoke at the event, announcing plans to boost medical tourism in the district. "The health minister and I will soon develop a plan to open the medical sector in this region to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal," Khader said. He also mentioned that Rs 25 crore has been allocated to complete the development of the road from Thokkottu to Deralakatte, a hub for medical colleges.
